Solar Foods
Factory 01 showroom and office interior

The Finnish company Solar Foods is a global pioneer in sustainable food innovation, revolutionising protein production. In 2024, the groundbreaking company launched a one-of-a-kind facility on a global scale: Factory 01, located in Vantaa, Finland. It is a factory and a hydrogen fermentation platform that grows Solein, the world’s most sustainable protein. Besides functioning as a research and development hub, Factory 01 serves as an engaging flagship for this rapidly growing food-tech trailblazer.
Designed by JKMM Interiors, the interior concept of Factory 01 reflects Solar Foods’ innovative ethos by creating an atmosphere emphasising the groundbreaking production process and offering an immersive visitor experience. The design, inspired by the themes of Water, Wind, and Sun – reflecting Solar Foods’ use of renewable energy – guides the material and colour palette across the Factory 01.
On the ground floor, the theme of Wind comes to life. The space is defined by its sense of immateriality and lightness, expressed through large, monochromatic surfaces in matte and reflective black, white concrete, aluminium, and stainless steel. This airy and dynamic palette mirrors the open, innovative energy of the factory and showroom floor.
The second floor, which houses the HQ office spaces, introduces the themes of Water and Sun. Here, the atmosphere shifts to one of warmth and tactility. The design incorporates natural wood finishes, soft textiles, and a warmer colour palette, fostering a human sense of comfort and focus for Solar Foods’ growing team.
500-square-meter showroom floor features four key spaces:
1. Exhibition space – A dynamic, open corridor connecting the showroom to production.
2. Multifunctional auditorium – Suitable for versatile presentations and events.
3. Restaurant & demo kitchen – A stage-like setup showcasing future meals.
4. Immersive space – Transformable for meetings, dining, or special events.
At the heart of the showroom lies the dramatic, two-story ”airspace”, a versatile area designed for everything from large events to intimate exhibitions. Open on three sides to the first floor, the space can also be enclosed with curtains for privacy. One wall features a large projection surface with cutting-edge audiovisual capabilities, while soundproof glass and an additional curtain layer separate it from the second-floor offices.
The exhibition space circulates around the first floor, connecting the other areas with wide, partially open corridors that allow flexible exhibitions directly linked to the production process and the HQ office spaces.
The Solein® Kitchen restaurant and demo kitchen highlight chefs preparing meals of the future. A slightly elevated, stage-like kitchen counter sits at the centre of the restaurant, with tables arranged to ensure all guests can watch the chefs at work.
The immersive space, accessible through a small door from the restaurant and via three large, pivoting doors from the exhibition space, offers flexibility for special events. By closing the doors to the exhibition space, this area transforms into an immersive meeting or dining venue.
Factory 01 is a living, evolving space that embodies the next generation of food production and sets the stage for a sustainable future – masterfully realised through JKMM Interiors’ thoughtful, forward-thinking design approach.
