Detailed local plans for the new Museum of Architecture and Design in Helsinki become legally binding
The detailed local plans for Helsinki’s Makasiiniranta, Olympiaranta and the new Museum of Architecture and Design have become legally binding. No appeals were submitted following their approval by the Helsinki City Council in June.
The decision marks an important step forward in the transformation of Helsinki’s South Harbour into an open and vibrant waterfront district. The new museum will be surrounded by a public event plaza, an open waterfront promenade and new commercial buildings.
JKMM Architects won the international design competition for the new Museum of Architecture and Design, which attracted 624 entries from around the world, in 2025. The winning proposal presents a bold, user-centred and environmentally conscious building that respects the cultural landscape of the South Harbour while creating a new landmark for Helsinki.
Design work is currently underway. Construction is expected to begin in early 2028, with the museum scheduled to open to the public in late 2030.
