The new annex of National Museum of Finland designed by JKMM

An open art competition is being held to find art for the new annex of the National Museum of Finland and the surrounding courtyard park, which will be both completed in 2027. The international 2-stage competition is organised by the State Art Commission of the Finnish National Gallery in cooperation with the National Museum of Finland, the Senate Properties, and the Finnish Heritage Agency. Stage I will take place from 8 December 2022 to 3 April 2023. A webinar will be organised for those interested in the competition on Thursday 15 December 2022.

In 2019, the international architecture competition for the annex of the museum was won by JKMM Architects. In 2027, the over 100-year-old main building will be accompanied by an impressive new underground annex, designed by JKMM. Above the ground, there will be a year-round public garden.

The purpose of the art competition is to find ideas for one artwork, several works, or an installation be installed in the annex of the National Museum. The place-specific and permanent work can be located in the courtyard park, inside the annex, in both, or in between.

Stage I 8 December 2022 – 3 April 2023 is an open ideas competition. The jury, comprising the Finnish State Art Commission, will select 4–6 proposals from the submissions for Stage II 10 May 2023 – 12 September 2023. Winning proposals of Stage I will develop their proposals further in next stage, and each one of them will be awarded €5,000 once the competition is over. The winning proposal will be implemented as the construction of the annex of the National Museum progresses.

The competition is a general and open international art competition for all citizens of the European Union and for non-EU citizens resident in Finland who are not subject to international sanctions.
