The Tammela Stadium, designed by JKMM Architects, has been selected as the winner of the 2023 Steel Structure of the Year Award. The award is one of the most prestigious Finnish architecture prizes, and it is awarded to a building project of high architectural quality that has ingeniously used steel and other metals in the construction phase. The winner is selected by an independent jury, this year chaired by architect SAFA Ted Schauman of Schauman & Nordgren Architecs Ab. The winner was announced at the Steel Structure Day in Helsinki on 22 November.

Finland’s first hybrid stadium has been built in the Tammela district of Tampere by an alliance between the City of Tampere, Pohjola Rakennus and JKMM Architects. It is seamlessly connected to the urban environment, offering high quality facilities for all city residents and visitors to enjoy the highest conditions for playing and watching top-class football, and other public events. The stadium, operated by Ilves Edustus, has a capacity of 8,000 people for football matches and up to 15,000 people for concerts and other mass events. Every stadium seat  has an unobstructed view of the field, i.e. the stands are free of pillars. The stadium will open for public in spring 2024.

The jury praises the project for its success in terms of urban design and development, the idea of combining housing and football, and the desire to create a stadium of ambitious capacity and quality for Finland, which successfully continues the high quality of sports arenas built in Tampere in recent years. The jury was also impressed by the insightful suspension bridge solution, which is a departure from steel structures, and the unobstructed views from all parts of the stadium.

The particularly demanding steel structures used in the project were designed by Ramboll Finland Oy, fabricated by Teräselementti Oy and installed by Temacon Finland Oy, all of whom played a crucial role in achieving a successful outcome.

Congratulations to the design team and all the members of the alliance!
