Nordic Comprehensive School
Basic improvement, modification and expansion of the Yhtenäiskoulu Käpylä School building.
The original school building completed in 1961 was designed by Marja and Keijo Petäjä. The extension part was completed in 1966. In the original plans, the school was planned to be built in three phases, of which the third phase was not implemented. In the Urban Planning Agency’s publication Opintie, which examines the need for protection of school buildings in Helsinki, the building is classified as category 2.
The L-shaped building complex opens onto the intermediate class yard with a glass-walled corridor connecting both phases. The building mass of the first phase is located on the slope in a north-south direction, so that the building is 1-storey on the side of the intermediate school yard and 2-storey on the western side. The building of the second phase is taller, shorter and wider than the first phase.
The most important aspects of the basic improvement include:
• Renewal of building technical systems
• Renewal of sub-base structures
• Renewal of facade plastering
• Renewal of windows
• Renewing the waterproofing and improving the thermal insulation
• Renovation of wet facilities
For the larger number of students, new classrooms will be built in the two extension wings, incl. new special classrooms for teaching manual skills, home economics and music. In addition, new kitchen facilities and an extension of the dining room will be made.
