A new hotel is being built right next to the Helsinki Central Railway Station. The railway station, designed by famous Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen in 1862, is one of Helsinki city centre’s most well-recognized architectural landmarks . The iconic station building creates an interesting dialogue with the modern yet timeless design of the new hotel.

The hotel houses the former administrational building of VR, the Finland’s state-owned railway company. With a complete renovation and new extension, the sombre and introverted block is transformed into an inviting, airy and modern hotel. The main entrance opens towards the railway tracks, welcoming arriving passengers to Helsinki.

The materials of the façade – glass and black steel – accentuate the railway heritage. Elegant glass and steel details create a contrast with the mass of the neighbouring granite-clad railway station. Inside, wooden surfaces bring warmth to the building.

The core of the concept is the old building hidden behind the facades. In the middle of the block, it creates a natural integration within the larger whole. A glass-ceiled inner courtyard with a winter garden feel will be designed around it. Reception, lobby and restaurant areas will all be located within the yard.

The old building will be raised above the neighbouring rooftops, thus adding a new shape to the Helsinki silhouette.
