JKMM’s Turku Library is a significant addition to a city block consisting the old library and several other historically valuable buildings. By constructing the new extension on the outer perimeter JKMM created an open space in the middle of the plot, which forms a courtyard for recreational use and space for a stage for cultural events.

The main 3 storey mass is linked to the original 100-year old library building and the chancellery of the governor building, (built at the beginning of the nineteenth century, now restored and transformed into a café and meeting rooms), through a single storey wing and elegant glass bridge.

The main entrance opens from the corner of two main streets. The large reading hall is reached by a straight main stairway, which opens to a monumental space containing the non-fiction stacks and reading areas. The guiding principle of the space planning was flexibility; the functions of the library may change radically in the future with the introduction of new media. The rooms are open, and the functions are limited only by the transformability of the easy-to-move furniture. Wood, concrete and natural stone are extensively used throughout the interior.
