Seamless Interchange

Location: Lahti, Finland
Function: Travel Center
Size: 11 000 m2
Status: Completed - 2016, Completed - 2018
Client: City of Lahti
Scope: Architecture, Landscape

The Lahti Travel Center is part of a transport interchange located next to the 1930s railway station, in the centre of Lahti.  By investing in such a contemporary modernisation of the interchange, Lahti city is investing in the wellbeing of it’s residents by raising the city’s profile whilst at the same time improving the city’s public and commercial traffic infrastructure.

JKMM’s landscaped intervention consists of a 60-meter long canopy for the bus terminal and a lift shaft leading to the road tunnel beneath, which has been sculpturally decorated. The new structures are built with perforated copper, structural glass and incorporate an integrated lighting system.

The choice of copper is timeless and strong, making the travel center a distinctly public building.  The imaginative use of integrated lighting introduces a contemporary pattern to the structures and a sense of warmth.
