Malmi Hospital
New hospital Verso combines the essence of nature, architecture, and wellbeing into a groundbreaking campus concept. This innovative hospital campus integrates proximity to nature and ecological design into a modern urban structure. The long building forms are nestled among tree canopies, shaping and accentuating the surrounding landscape. The church remains the heart of the area, with the hospital complementing it to create a unified campus focused on the environment and wellbeing.
The curved wooden-glass facades and lush therapy gardens invite patients and visitors to experience the closeness of nature as an integral part of the hospital setting. The hospital harmonises with its surroundings through robust brick facades and a well-scaled design, where lower structures connect with the church, and taller sections integrate into the surrounding residentials.
Hospital’s architecture embodies the green transition and sustainable solutions. The modular building design supports adaptability and spatial expansion. Patient rooms are filled with natural light and open to views of therapy gardens, promoting recovery. The choice of materials, including CLT panel structures and wooden details, emphasises ecological values.
Interior layouts and pathways encourage gradual movement, empowering patients to take an active role in their rehabilitation. Therapy paths and experience zones in the verdant surroundings offer intimate spaces for recovery to a diverse range of users.
Clear routes, separate pathways for patients, visitors, and service traffic, and optimised spatial logistics create an efficient and barrier-free environment. Parking facilities, public transportation links, and cycling connections ensure accessibility to the area. Integrated technical solutions prioritise energy efficiency, utilising low-carbon materials, solar power generation, and renewable cooling and heating systems. This hospital is not only a model of functional excellence but also a showcase for aesthetically and ecologically sustainable future.
Our competition entry Verso for the new Malmi Hospital in Helsinki was developed in collaboration with Masu Planning (landscape design), WSP (traffic planning), Ramboll (structural design), and Granlund (HVAC, electrical, and hospital planning).
On November 8, 2024, our proposal, was awarded an honorary mention.
